BUSINESS ANALYSIS

Turning data and information into valuable business insights

This website helps individuals, and their organizations turn data and information into insights that decision-makers cannot, and will not, ignore.  Here we share commonly applied methods for helping generate actionable recommendations for decision-makers, as well as a handful of detailed papers (Essentials Pack) that address the process of business and competitive analysis itself.

Given the priority of competitiveness in firms today, business professionals need to understand business and competitive analysis and how it works. More importantly, they need to convert the wealth of available data and information into a valuable form for decision-making and actions. What is collected must be transformed into insights to support decision-making. Those insights can then drive marketplace actions that help your organizations win share and grow faster than rivals.

Successful decision-making is accomplished only through quality business analysis.

Business analysis is one of the more complex and critical roles a manager, consultant, functional specialist, strategist, or intelligence provider is called upon to perform. Although great strides have been made to improve business strategy and intelligence projects and execute or manage data collection, the same cannot be said for business or competitive analysis.

We seek to solve this problem by offering a range of analytical tools and frameworks (such as A Better SWOT Analysis, Industry Fusion Analysis, War Gaming, and Driving Forces Analysis – to name a few) needed to conduct business and competitive analysis in the 21st century.

The analytical techniques we have included all have a history of being used in various business contexts for several decades or longer. All the analytical tools available in the tool shop have been used in real organizations and do not exist just in concept or theory. While some of the methods included may be unfamiliar to even the more seasoned business analyst, unfamiliarity is not a great indicator of a method’s value.

We think you’ll find that even some of the ‘new’ or unfamiliar techniques will be of high potential value helping you to make sense of your firm’s business and competitive contexts.

Each analytical tool includes:

  • Background about the origin of each analytical technique
  • Strategic rationale and implications of each analytical technique
  • Key topics and questions addressed by each analytical technique
  • Strengths and advantages of the analytical technique
  • Weaknesses and limitations of the analytical technique
  • A step by step process for applying each analytical technique
  • Provide a case study for each analytical technique
  • An analytical technique Worksheet
  • FAROUT© Summary about each analytical technique
  • Related Tools and Techniques
  • References

Our analytical tools will help you develop high-value insights, make sense of the competitive environment confronting your organization, and advise decision-makers.
