Babette Bensoussan, MBA

In my career, I have watched many organisations make the wrong decisions or simply miss the indicators that spell disaster for their business. With that moment goes all the intellectual property and the livelihoods of many, but most importantly – the potential for growth and innovations that are now no longer able to be fulfilled. In many cases the decisions were obvious.

I have built my career as an internationally recognised leader in the field of Competitive Intelligence (CI) and Strategy in both business and academically. I am an entrepreneur, a consultant, a company director, an author, an academic and a business coach as well as a corporate speaker on CI and Strategy.

I founded The MindShifts™ Group in 1992, as a leading consulting company specialising in Competitive Intelligence, Strategy and Business Mentoring, in response to the number of organisations looking to interpret the landscape of business and make smarter decisions.

Since then I have led MindShifts™ through over 350 projects with Australian and Fortune 500 companies. Utilising skills and principles of CI and Strategic Intelligence we have successfully guided a vast range of clients within industries such as aerospace, information technology, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, and financial services companies to build greater businesses.

In 2006 I was honoured to receive the SCIP Meritorious Award, the world’s most prestigious award in the field of Competitive Intelligence. I was and still am the first female and only Australian recipient of this prize.

It has always been important for business to make the best decisions it can and with my extensive academic involvement I know the value of sharing knowledge and helping organisations understand the impacts of Competitive and Strategic Intelligence, so I co-authored five critically acclaimed and popular books on Competitive Intelligence and Strategy. Two of them, Analysis without Paralysis and Business and Competitive Analysis, remain the world’s number one and two best selling titles on Competitive Intelligence which shows the need for this sort of thinking within the areas of education and business.

I have held teaching positions at many of Australia’s leading universities and business schools and am currently an Adjunct Professor in the School of Business at the University of Technology, Sydney.

Throughout my professional career, I have been interested in better understanding how executives and their organizations arrive at DCAPS– an acronym I use for decisions, choices, actions, plans and strategy, and how these help align them in their wider environmental contexts. I have worked as an officer in a large banking corporation, served as an adviser for numerous governmental entities around the globe, been a tenured academic at numerous universities, founded organizations, was elected to lead several national or international professional associations, and regularly advocate for and invest in many organizations who’s missions I believe in and deeply support.

I’m the Chief Analytics Officer (CAO) at Aurora WDC, Madison, WI, one of the globe’s leading applied intelligence professional services firms. I am also Professor (Adj.) in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and Institute for Health and Equity, Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). Both in classrooms and boardrooms, my ideas, methods, and principles such as Analytic Fitness, Configuring 4-Sets, KITs+1, Intelligence Analysis 3.0, De-Risking the Future, FAROUT©, Intelligence-driven Innovation and Navigating the Next Normal are presented internationally and regularly validated in dialogues & application with accomplished executives and top students.

I’ve authored/edited 16 published books and over 220 refereed papers/scholarly chapters. I have always been passionate in educating future professionals in my fields of expertise, and hundreds of my former students are practicing, successful professionals in the fields I introduced them to. My ideas and research results are included in professional certification qualifying and licensing exams and taught at many of the globe’s prominent universities. I am the top-cited Google Scholar globally in several business and communication-related subjects such as corporate communications, marketing intelligence, and strategic thinking, and have led hundreds of learning events, been quoted in prominent international business media, and advised numerous associations, public agencies, think tanks. I have also had the honor of working with some of the most highly respected international brands. These include 3M, Alcan, AmEx, BHP, EDS, ExxonMobil, GE, GM, HydroOne, IBM, J&J, Lennar, Levi Strauss, Merck, P&G, Suncor Energy, Telstra, TD Bank and UPS, among many others that are doing lots of good things for their stakeholders that I still work with.

Last of all, I am Deputy Editor of the Journal of Public Affairs (Wiley), Vice President of the Council of CI Fellows, a member of the Public Relations and Communications Association (MPRCA), and the Canadian Who’s Who.
